I use the rinse almost every day on my doctors advice. About once a week - I will produce a good sized piece of solid mucus - out of one nostril - occasionally it contains a little blood. My GP says its nothing to worry about - but is it?

Did you have sinus surgery in the past ? If yes, it is the accumulation of the mucus that is now soft enough to be shaken off the wall of the nasal passage or sinus cavity. If the issue continues, please do the culture. May consider seeing an ENT doctor.
