I have no microwave oven and wonder what you consider a safe way to warm the water alternatively. Is a clean stainless steel saucepan OK or is it unlikely to be clean enough for squirting water up your nose?!

If you boil the water in a stainless steel vessel, it is perfectly OK. Please make sure that water temperature is down before you rinse the nose.
